Power Up Gambia!
AN OUTREACH PROJECT UNITING SCHOOLS IN DELAWARE & SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA

POWER UP GAMBIA is now run by a board, several committees and advisors. The SCHOOLS COMMITTEE focuses on four objectives for youths:

  • CULTURAL AWARENESS
  • RENEWABLE ENERGY EDUCATION
  • HEALTHCARE
  • OUTREACH

It is a truly inspirational project that can send positive messages to children about uniting for a common cause, understanding a completely different culture and learning about renewable energy technology

    Feb. June '07

  • Schools contacted and information provided to faculty

  • Summer '07

  • Developing and organizing ideas

  • Sept. '07 - May '08

  • THEMATIC YEAR FOR STUDENTS - See proposed activities (not limited!)

  • Spring '08

  • CULMINATION - Fundraiser event, school exhibits, and “souvenir book”

  • Year of 2009

  • ACHIEVEMENT - Kathryn's presentation to schools of installed solar panels

The school can be involved in any way it sees fit. It can be as small as talking about it in the classroom, or it can take a larger view, such as linking the project to the community service curriculum or an in depth study of alternative energies. The project should serve as a starting point for creative faculty members, students and motivated parents.

We will strive to coordinate the project throughout the school year, propose resources for related activities at various school levels and organize the Spring Fund Raiser event. We are working on setting up a science contest based on alternative energies.

  • A SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE: a faculty member, a parent or maybe even a student. Someone who will stay in close communication with the Power Up Gambia School committee.

  • PARTICIPATION IN THE SPRING '08 EVENT: by providing art items made by the children to be auctioned, entertainment (dances, music, poetry) or by exhibiting the children's work throughout the year.

  • DOCUMENTING ALL THE SCHOOL EVENTS RELATING TO THE PROJECT: One of our goals is to provide the children with a 'souvenir book' with pictures taken throughout the year from all the schools. A nice way for children to feel a sense of ownership and unity.
