African Culture Children's Stories From Africa (DVD)    
  Story-teller, Nandi Nyembi, tells 12 stories from an award-winning collection of African fables and songs. The stories are built around the age-old tales of African wildlife: wart hogs, monkeys, crocodiles, and the like. These tales teach simple morals: the dangers of greed, the importance of picking your friends,  following your heart. Only a few still pictures accompany each story - the heart of this program is our vivacious storyteller. African Culture "The Magic Drum"

Lower School  
  Three different authors tell a story from Africa’s savannah, sea and skies.  The title story concerns Fodo the frog and his magic drum. His grandfather had given him a magic drum and one night Fodo leads his animal friends to a vegetable garden where they all feast. The farmer is furious and catches them feasting again the next night. He chases Fodo to the waterhole and Fodo jumps in with his drum. Ever since that night Fodo is too afraid to bring his drum out of the water and the sound of his under water drumming can be heard across the plains.     
       
African Culture "Mcheshi Goes on a Journey"

Lower School  
  Written in English and Swahili.  A girl named Mcheshi and her aunt are going on a long journey to visit a friend.  Along the way they see Nairobi, the Indian Ocean and Manda Island, and experience many different modes of transportation.  At the end of the book there’s a map and some fun activities.    
       
African Culture "The Secret of the Mango Grove"
illustrated by Robin Miranda
   
  A rich man owns a wonderful mango grove and his daughter takes care of all the creatures in it.  A visitor convinces the man to get rid of the birds in his grove because they make holes in the mangos.  His daughter is sad and when the birds are driven away, insects take over and make many holes in the mangos.  So the man puts pesticides on his mangos which make him sick.  Finally the man understands nature’s delicate balance and his daughter is happy again. African Culture "Zamani – African Tales from Long Ago"
by Tom Nevin
Lower through to High School  
   For older Elementary through High School.  Before each of ten tales from ten different countries, Nevin provides a little background on the country.  For the first story, “Ankoma’s Secret”, he describes Ghana’s magnificent palm trees and beaches, and says, “The Akan people live near the shore and love to tell stories.”  “Ankoma’s Secret” is about a farmer whose home, farm, and cattle are washed away during a flood.  Ankoma and his wife move and start to make palm wine only to have an antelope steal their palm sap.  Ankoma chases the antelope to a village of animals where the wise old lion king gives Ankoma the power to understand the language of animals.  This power makes Ankoma wealthy and wise.  A moral follows each story.
