SJGH has POWER!  –Mar 15, 2009

I just returned from a truly incredible trip to Bwiam. The Sulayman Junkung General Hospital has grown substantial in the last year. Most importantly, the number of patients at the hospital has exploded. The hospital is gaining credibility and drawing patients from all over country.

The solar panels are magnificent! It was a moving moment when I saw the solar panels with my own eyes. They are not only working beautifully but they are also a attraction of the village. When the sun comes up first thing in the morning the trackers move the panels towards the sun. There is quite an audience a sunrise to watch this happen! We thought long and hard about the tracking system (extra moving parts means more maintenance) but in the end I think we made the right decision. The panels are drawing 14.5kW (more than the 12kW we thought they would produce!).

The official handing over of the solar energy system from GamSolar to the hospital was held on March 11th. What a celebration! Jolla war dancers started the celebration, followed by speeches, food, and more dancing. Power Up Gambia received a standing ovation from all of the attendees. The staff and community are so genuinely thankful for these solar panels.
Jolla dancers started the ceremony. The military officier in the middle, the representative of President Jammeh, was called on to join in the dance.
Some of the attendees finding shade under the solar panels. It was hot! The sun was beating down the whole time - great for the solar panels, not so great for all of the attendees...
The hospital staff are proud of the solar panels. They made this sign for when the President of Burundi visited in February.
SJGH's maintenance team is committed to making sure these panels work well into the future. The three men kneeling in the front make up "Team Solar," Kebba, Famara, Lamin (left to right).

I just returned from a visit to the hospital. Saw the solar system: WOW! Just brilliant. We are from a Dutch group of managers doing a 3 year project there. We also profit from the solar panels, as this energy is "free" and diesel no longer is necessary. The funds can be redirected to other structural improvements of the hospital. So, herewith from the Dutch group: thanks!
