Power Up Gambia Chapters

Roles and Responsibilities

Power Up Gambia is excited that you want to create a University or High School Chapter and join us in our mission to bring electricity and water to healthcare facilities in The Gambia! We believe that our Chapters are vital to help young people learn about Power Up Gambia, sustainable development, energy and water conservation. We are delighted to partner with you to make this world a brighter, greener place.

So that you find success in your PUG Chapter as an extension of the Power Up Gambia core, we have outlined the following roles and responsibilities:

Roles:

1. Educating your community

We suggest you spend 50% of you time in education projects. We have developed several workshops that help others learn about conservation, solar energy, and the history of The Gambia. We hope that you use these to teach others. We also have put together a presentation to spread the word about our mission, and to inspire young people to do something positive in their communities using Power Up Gambia as an example. Finally, we have compiled a lesson plan which you can apply with the teachers at your local schools.

2. Fundraising

We suggest that you complete 3 fundraisers per year to help us bring electricity and water to healthcare clinics in The Gambia through renewable sources of energy.

3. Determining how best your group can help PUG

We suggest you use your remaining time to think of ways you can best help PUG or other young people become inspired to conserve and help others!

Power Up Gambia Chapter - Responsibilities Chart

Responsibilities:

1. Education

The Education project consists of two parts: (a) the workshops and lesson plans, and (b) the Power Up Gambia Presentation.

The workshops on (1) Conservation and Solar Energy, and (2) Gambia and The World target our mission by emphasizing our belief that environmental and social justice go hand in hand. Civil liberties are human rights, and so is the ability to live in an area free of pollution. The history of The Gambia offers the opportunity to touch upon African history – in general, a topic underrepresented in our classrooms. Also, as a conduit for the slave passage to the Americas, the county's history addresses the African-American Civil Rights movement and the teachings of W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King, Jr and others.

We suggest that you perform 3 workshops per year to students who are in middle or high school. To do this, you will need to contact such schools in your district. You may also want to contact other youth groups (boy scouts, girl scouts, 4-H, Circle K, etc) to give workshops.

We would also like you to encourage teachers to use our lesson plans to help students learn more about Power Up Gambia, science, problem solving, and history.

We would also like you to show our presentation to as many people as you can in your community! Rotary Clubs, schools, and sports clubs are good places to start. It is our firm conviction that a video cannot replace the passion and enthusiasm that you can bring to the podium. Help us spread the word about what we've achieved in The Gambia, and what we aspire to do next. Most importantly, use Power Up Gambia as an example to inspire people of all ages, to empower them, and to motivate them to give back to their community and world.

2. Fundraising

We suggest you complete the following fundraisers.

A. A walk / run on your campus or local park

Pick a weekend morning to hold a 5K in honor of Power Up Gambia.

B. Hold a PUG Event

Have an open bar night, a concert, a battle of the bands, a poetry reading, etc where people learn a little about PUG and have a wonderful time! Proceeds will go to PUG.

C. Have a fundraiser of your choice

Here are some suggestions – bake sales, lemonade stands, Pennies for Power, Recycle bottles and Cans and donate the proceeds to PUG.

Remember to keep your fundraisers environmentally friendly!

3. Your Creative Ideas!

What else can your chapter do to help PUG's mission? What else can your chapter do to help kids in your community become interested in helping others and the world? What other ways can you think of to create leadership opportunities for yourself and your friends in the realm of a sustainable future? Even if it is just ideas, we would love to hear what else we can do to make this world a better place! Let us know what you're up to!
